Protecting Your Livelihood:  Tips for Preventing Medical Malpractice Claims and Protecting Your Assets

Jeffrey S. Brown, Esq. and Stuart M. Hochron, M.D., J.D. will be presenting at the Bergen County Medical Society in River Edge, NJ, on the topic "Protecting Your Livelihood:  Tips for Preventing Medical Malpractice Claims and Protecting Your Assets."  A medical malpractice claim against a physician can ruin an otherwise successful practice and threaten a physician's livelihood altogether.  In order to maintain a successful physician practice, practitioners must mitigate the risk of medical malpractice claims and protect their assets. The presentation will include a discussion of:

(a) Issues related to informed consent;

(b) How effective communication with patients and office staff can reduce the likelihood of a malpractice claim or governmental investigation;

(c) The importance of maintaining accurate and detailed medical records;

(d) Ways to protect assets in the event of a malpractice judgment;

(e) HIPAA, including the enhanced penalties recently enacted; and

(f) Other new laws in the New Jersey affecting physician practice.
